Watermelon may be a simple and delicious summer snack, but learning how to cut a watermelon is slightly difficult. To get the most out of your watermelon, and enjoy as much of the flesh as possible, there is a specific way to slice these round fruits that signal the beginning of summer.
How to cut a Watermelon?
If you want to cut a watermelon properly, there are a few options, including cutting them into slices, cubes, chunks or sticks, or even cutting them for a fancy summer cocktail.
Slices
Step 1 – Slice the watermelon into 4 equal quarters lengthwise.
Step 2 – Turn each quarter so it is lying on one side of the flesh.
Step 3 – With a large knife, cut each quarter of the watermelon into even slices, through the rind.
Step 4 – Repeat with the remaining three quarters of the watermelon.
Cubes/Chunks
Step 1 – Slice the watermelon into 4 equal quarters lengthwise.
Step 2 – Lying the quarter on the rind, slice downward through the watermelon flesh, stopping at the rind.
Step 3 – Cutting from the sides, make two slices lengthwise down the watermelon, about halfway through the flesh.
Step 4 – From the other side, repeat slicing halfway through the watermelon.
Step 5 – Slide your knife along the bottom of the watermelon, freeing the watermelon chunks from the rind.
Step 6 – Repeat this process with the other three quarters of the melon.
Step 6 – Push the chunks and cubes off the rind onto a plate and serve!
Sticks
Step 1 – Slice the watermelon in half lengthwise.
Step 2 – Turn the watermelon so the flesh is facing down.
Step 3 – Cut even slices along the watermelon lengthwise, being careful not to let the slices fall over.
Step 4 – Turn the watermelon 90 degrees and cut another line of slices.
Step 5 – Let the watermelon sticks fall naturally for better presentation and serve!
Cocktail
Step 1 – Cut a small round hole in the side of the watermelon, through the rind, about 2.5 inches deep.
Step 2 – Secure the watermelon in place, with the hole pointing up.
Step 3 – Open a bottle of vodka and turn it upside-down into the hole of the watermelon.
Step 4 – Ensure that the bottle is pressed firmly into the hole you created.
Step 5 – Let the alcohol slowly be released into the watermelon, which will absorb the alcohol.
Step 6 – Allow the watermelon to slowly fill up (usually takes 2-3 hours).
Step 7 – Remove the bottle from the watermelon.
Step 8 – Slice the watermelon and serve!
