The health benefits of peppermint oil include its ability to treat indigestion, respiratory problems, headache, nausea, fever, stomach and bowel spasms and pain. Due to the presence of menthol, menthone and menthyl esters, peppermint and peppermint oil find wide applications in manufacture of soap, shampoo, cigarette, toothpaste, chewing gum, tea and ice cream.

Peppermint is a cross between watermint and spearmint and is native to Europe. Historically, the herb has been known for its medicinal uses. Hence it is often termed as the world’s oldest medicine.

Unlike many other herbs and essential oils, numerous health benefits of peppermint and peppermint oil have been studied and proved by the scientific community. As a result, peppermint oil is also sold in the form of capsules and tablets.

Peppermint oil is also used as a flavoring agent. You will find very few people who will not find peppermint suitable to their palate.

Peppermint oil contains numerous minerals and nutrients including manganese, iron, magnesium, calcium, folate, potassium, and copper. It also contains omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin A and Vitamin C.

The health benefits of peppermint oil include the following:

  • Indigestion: Peppermint oil is very helpful in digestion. Often people put a few drops of peppermint oil in a glass of water and drink it after their meal due to its digestive properties. It is carminative and therefore helps in removing gas. Peppermint oil is a good tonic for those who have a low appetite. It also helps during motion sickness and upset stomach. Preliminary research has proved that peppermint oil in the combination of caraway oil can be used for treating heartburns.
  • Dental Care: Peppermint oil, due to its antiseptic properties, is useful for dental care. It removes bad breath and helps teeth and gums deal with germs. No wonder, it is added in numerous toothpastes. It is also useful for treating toothaches.
  • Respiratory Problems: Menthol, which is present in abundance in peppermint oil, helps in clearing the respiratory tract. It is an effective expectorant and therefore provides instantaneous, though temporary, relief in numerous respiratory problems including nasal congestion, sinusitis, asthma, bronchitis, cold and cough. As a result, it is used in numerous cold rubs. When these cold rubs are rubbed on the chest, they remove nasal and respiratory congestion immediately.
  • Nausea and Headache: Peppermint oil is a good home remedy for nausea and headache. Applying peppermint oil in diluted form on the forehead is known to remove headache.
  • Stress: Like most other essential oils, peppermint is able to provide relief from stress, depression and mental exhaustion due to its refreshing nature. It is also effective against anxiety and restlessness.
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome: The muscle relaxing property of peppermint oil has been found to ease irritable bowel syndrome. This has been validated through preliminary scientific research though the exact mechanism is still unknown.
  • Antispasmodic: Peppermint oil is very effective for gastroscopy, colonoscopy and during double-contrast barium enema. It is applied intraluminally. Further benefits of peppermint oil due to its antispasmodic properties are being studied.
  • Urinary Tract Infection: Peppermint oil can be used for treating urinary tract infection (UTI). However, thorough scientific studies are yet to be conducted to confirm this.
  • Pain Relief: Peppermint oil can be used externally for providing relief from pain. It is believed that the presence of calcium antagonism in peppermint oil aids in removing pain. It is cooling in nature and therefore helps reduce fever.
  • Immune System: Peppermint oil increases your immunity to diseases and therefore helps you in preventing a number of diseases.
  • Blood Circulation: It also improves blood circulation.
  • Hair Care: Peppermint oil is very useful for hair care as it gives a cooling effect to the head, and removes dandruff and lice.
  • Skin Care: Peppermint oil contains Menthol, which is good for skin. It gives a cooling effect. Further it nourishes dull skin and improves oily skin.

It is further believed that peppermint oil is useful for treating cancer and tuberculosis.

Peppermint blends well with various other essential oils including eucalyptus, rosemary, lemon, marjoram, etc.

Hey, just wanted to add my contribution to P/M oil. I put it in water, coffe & tea. It is refreshing, opens sinuses and helps bad breath, makes you feel more clear headed and alert. I think to it does indeed help with aches/pains and neasuea(sp)I have been doing this for just one week and noticed all these benefits enough to research P/M oil further. My grandmother 40+ years ago used to eat it and I have always wondered why she like it enough to keep a bowl of those circles of candy next to her bed. And now I know.

I usually drink peppermint tea for indigestion, I have been suffering with severe indigestion for several days now, and thought about some tea, which I am out of, I remembered that I had purchased some small bottles of peppermint oil to control a mouse problem, we had a a prior home. I took a small amount with some warm water, and I am burping now, and pain is relieved!
Nick  - TMJ AND ABSCESS PAIN!!! 2010-04-20 07:09:56
I recently found out that I have TMJ/TMD, because I had an oral abscess that hurt so bad it worse than any other pain I've ever felt. I was prescribed 10mg Hydrocodone 325 Acetaminophen (Norco/Vicodin) told to take 2 every 4 hours while the pain was extreme, and 600mg ibuprofen that i was to take every 8 hours, and lastly a strong anti-biotic.

Even with all that pain medication I could still feel the pain. It literally was the worst pain I've ever felt and wouldn't wish this kind of pain on my worse enemy. So I stopped in the drug store to get some liquid maximum strength Kanka because if you've ever used it you'd know it's thee best thing for oral pain especially when it's from abscesses. It worked, pretty good for all of about 10 minutes until the pain broke through again.

I was desperate, felt like I had someone driving a spike into my brain, pulling it out, and repeating the process. I remembered that clove oil is sold at some places as a tooth pain reliever, but I also remem...

Melissa Milne-Kerwin, LMT  - Quality of peppermint oil 2010-03-09 21:38:36
I see that a few people have asked questions about peppermint oil and whether or not it will work. A true essential oil is powerful medecine. Beware essential oils that say 'do not ingest' or 'do not put on skin'. These are not true essential oils and are mixed with alcohol or esters. If an oil is food grade or perfume grade, then it is not medecine. Only therepeutic grade or medicinal grade E.O. heals. There is no organization in America that regulates essential oils, so a bottle can say that its pure, but only have a small percentage of actual essential oil in it. I use only Young Living Essential oils because I want to know that I am using medecine and not chemicals.
As far as Peppermint oil for IBS, instead of taking it orally, try (only with pure therepeutic grade, please) rubbing it into your belly while you are laying down. You can do that a couple of times a day. It will help relax your belly muscles, as well as your intestinal muscles. Stress and tightness is a hug...

I suffer from migraines and sinus problems so when I decided to include aromatherapy soap in my line of handmade soap; I decided to do some research. I researched several herbs, essential oils and combinations of essential oils that would assist in relieving the sinus pressure and also the pain associated with the migraines. Peppermint became my number one choice.
When I feel the sinus pressure start to build or one of my headaches coming on, I take a hot shower using my peppermint soap. I lather the wash cloth with the soap and wash my face, and then rinsing the cloth real well, I put it over my nose and mouth and breathe in deeply several times. The steam of the hot shower and the strong scent of peppermint relax my muscles and I can feel my sinus’s open up. This has saved me from going from headache to full blown migraine.
In no time I feel so much better. I take medication for my migraines, but since using my peppermint soap, I do not have to take the medication so often...

I have been using Peppermint Essential Oil for years, my kids get into it too now, at the first hint of a sore throat my kids ask for it. We dab a bit on out tongue every few hours, kills any sore throat before it takes hold. I also use it for digestive problems and I have mixed a few drops into a jar of Vicks Vaporub and we put some on our feet at night with socks over the top. When you wake up in the morning you feel so much better.
It truly is the best medicine.

I put a few drops of peppermint oil in my bath this morning and I felt like I had been in a spa! I felt refreshed and invigorated. I would imagine this would be great for someone with nasal congestion.

I work in front of a computer for the majority of the day. By the end of the day I would end up with bad headaches and I was tiered of drinking medicine and wanted to try a more natural remedy. So I bought some Peppermint Oil from handsonaromatherapy.com and it really worked it stopped my headaches
Matt  - Other uses 2009-09-27 11:15:18
My family used to farm peppermint years ago. We still have some 30 year old peppermint in a jar that we still use. If you have a cold or if your nose is stuffed up, you can put a bit on a handkerchief and place it in your room. This works very well. My grandmother also put one drop on a spoonful of sugar to help with upset stomach as well as for hiccups. It worked great for me for everything other than hiccups.

I mix my essential body oils into Shea Butter. Seems to work well to rub it on. Also have used other light oils such as almond, and safflower. I like the Shea Butter the best. Benny

HAVE JUST BOUGHT PEPPERMINT OIL CAPS FOR IBS, IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE THAT CAN TELL ME IF I AM WASTING MY TIME OR DOES IT HELP.

THANKS

Having suffered from IBS for over 7 years and more recently from anxiety/panic attacks, I've just started taking Colpermin which contains peppermint oil in a special coating (enteric) which should ensure that oil gets released in the appropriate part of the system. The results so far have been very encouraging. I'd suggest trying this for a few weeks (just one capsule half an hour before a meal).

The key reason behind IBS is stress which peppermint attempts to relieve too.

Good luck.
