Government Sponsored State Health insurance plans give the benefits like to children from birth to age 18 in the form of free and low-cost health insurance. The benefits included in this include well child check-ups and immunizations, sick child doctor visits, prescriptions, vision and dental care, hospitalization, mental health and substance abuse services.

Other benefits offered by the government include Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) which protects ensured employees and their families. The employees and their families can retain their group insurance benefits for a limited period of time under this plan in the event of a life threatening condition. Medical benefits provided under the terms of the group health plan and available to COBRA beneficiaries may include:

  • Inpatient and outpatient hospital care
  • Physician care
  • Surgery and other major medical benefits
  • Prescription drugs
  • Any other medical benefits, such as dental and vision care

Plans like Medicaid are useful for families which cannot afford to pay their medical bills immediately. Eligibility criteria are stringent, and under the plan the insured families' hospital bills are paid by the state itself directly to the service provider.

Medicare is another government insurance plan that provides the insured with coverage to individuals aged 65 and older and certain disabled people for medical ailments, such as those with end-stage renal disease. The insured can go to any service provider in the network and avail the benefits of the Plan. The plan is flexible to an extent and has a number of different combinations which can be looked through. This plan also covers the drugs which are to be purchased. Medicare is working with private companies approved by Medicare that provide different ways to get health care and prescription drug coverage in the Medicare Program. The Medicare plan that is chosen affects many things like cost, benefits, doctor choice, convenience, and quality.

Medi - Cal is an initiative by the State of California that provides insurance to pregnant women. There are affordable schemes like the Maternity card which also gives coverage with for mothers-to-be.

State sponsored insurance plans also give the insured person access to the provision of check - ups at a regular interval.
